MANKS LTD

In the early spring of 1996, Manks was conceived over a hearty bowl of soup at the Museum of Modern Art & Scandinavian Design, Copenhagen. The founding directors, Paul Fung and Susan Man returned home with the seedlings of an enterprise that grew beyond expectation. Both ardent collectors of European Art & Antiques with a leaning toward Scandinavian Design for over 20 years, this husband and wife partnership combined their suitable strengths to form the first earnest endeavor to introduce 20th Century European Art & Antiques and Scandinavian Modern Design to Hong Kong. In a city dominated by Oriental arts and antiques, Manks is the first company of its kind in the region dealing in 20th Century Modern Design from Europe.

Back in 1996, Manks opened shop after restoring a character 1960s building on Elgin Street, in the now renowned Soho district. Occupying over 2,600 square feet of shop Floor, Manks showcased her vast collection of unique European Antiques and Scandinavian Design pieces from the 20th Century. Ten years on, in our continuing effort to promote the appreciation of history and culture, Manks lovingly restored a neglected 1935 colonial terrace house off Garden Road for use as our present showroom, making a bold statement again to all who pass that the past is not to be dismissed. Nestled amongst modern high rises in the Central district, Manks shop house as it is fondly known, overlooks the Hong Kong Zoological & Botanical Gardens and the Chief Executive's residence. While we are in close proximity to the financial district, Manks is still one of the best kept secrets in town, frequented by discerning collectors, architects and designers, who appreciate the essence of 20th Century Modern Design and European antiques.

Owing to her commitment to 20th Century Scandinavian Modern Design in the region, Manks was invited in 2005 as sole representative of mid-century modern furniture and lighting designed by Scandinavian Design icons, Hans Wegner, Verner Panton, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Nanna Ditzel and Borge Morgensen. The Mid-Century designed, newly manufactured furniture and lighting, known as Modern Classics, now stands proudly side by side with Manks Antiques at both her Quarry Bay warehouse and the Central shop house, offering our customers a choice of original 20th Century Design pieces or brand new furniture and lighting from distinctive designs of the 20th Century.

In June of 2006, Manks' new sister, Manks Quarters was established. A unique real estate business specializing in finding older character properties for our clients, Manks Quarters addresses the overwhelming need to bring back quality living to the region. With Manks Antiques & Manks Modern Classics' bringing the 20th Century European lifestyle to the territory, Manks Quarters is our new arm in promoting the conservation of a by-gone era. Our aim is to provide the discerning with a portfolio of character properties not listed with the regular real estate agents as well as offering the owners of older properties, the opportunity to list their property with a company offering a group of receptive clientele, who appreciate the beauty of the past.

The concept of Manks has enjoyed a healthy degree of success to date. The most rewarding being the cultural influence we have achieved by introducing a very European way of living to complement the Oriental lifestyle in Hong Kong. Through Manks, we proudly bring 20th Century Decorative Arts & European Antiques, Scandinavian Modern Design and Period Character Properties to the attention of the discerning and we will endeavour to continue our calling into the 21st Century.
